Putumayo Presents: Yoga

Putumayo Presents: Yoga
Yoga is Putumayo’s first CD release featuring songs selected to accompany yoga practice and serve as a relaxing soundtrack for daily life. Rooted in ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, the practice of yoga has evolved over the past 5,000 years. Adopted by millions of people around the world, yoga provides a vehicle for greater health and spiritual awareness. Music has long had a close relationship with yoga, particularly in the Bhakti tradition, which incorporates musical chants into its practice.
With his extensive background as a yoga instructor and musician, Sean Johnson, founder of Wild Lotus Yoga studio in New Orleans, collaborated closely with Putumayo on this project. Combining songs used in his classes with Putumayo’s global research, Yoga creates a musical flow that works as well during yoga practice as at home for meditation or relaxation. Sean’s expansive liner notes, which include a glossary of yoga terms, will help people better understand the practice of yoga and its relationship to music.
Yoga features renowned musicians from around the world. British-born, South Indian artist Susheela Raman duets with Kenyan singer Ayub Ogada on the harmonious “O Rama.” Krishna Das, who is the best-known US performer of traditional Indian kirtan-style music, demonstrates call-and-response chanting on “Hanuman Baba (Dub Farm Remix).” Costa Rican group Amounsulu create a serene atmosphere by blending sitars and glass bottles on the song “El Bosque Eterno de los Niños (Children’s Eternal Rainforest).” On “Bolo Ram” celebrated western devotional musician Wah! sings a tranquil verse that is believed to bring bliss to all who chant it. Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band are known for their beautiful, melodic chanting as displayed on “Om Hari Om/Sharanam Ganesha (Refuge).”
Yoga also features the collaborative world fusion group The Lucknow Project, US kirtan artist Gaura Vani And As Kindred Spirits, renowned producer/musician Ben Leinbach and percussionist Geoffrey Gordon, bhajan and kirtan singer Karnamrita Dasi and British producer Niraj Chag. Rounding out this eclectic collection are Swedish musician and teacher Yogini, Senegalese singer Ablaye Cissoko with German trumpeter Volker Goetze, husband and wife duo Shantala and Bhutanese monk Lama Gyurme with French pianist Jean-Philippe Rykiel.

Yantra Yoga: The Tibetan Yoga of Movement

Yantra Yoga: The Tibetan Yoga of Movement
Yantra Yoga offers the practitioner a unique approach to yoga practice, parallel to the Hatha Yoga of the Hindu tradition. Called "The Union of Sun and Moon," it is a dynamic system of trulkhor (movements) and tsalung (pranayamas, breath control) and differs from more widespread yogas in that it is done as a sequence of movements coordinated with the breath and specific ways of holding it. Yantra Yoga helps the practitioner to relax and achieve a state of well-being and harmony, at the same time enhancing physical health, energy, and mental balance.
At a more profound level, it is an important practice to integrate body, speech, and mind in a state that is beyond normal dualistic concepts. Yantra Yoga is a very rich body of knowledge that includes three preliminary series, 75 yantras (asanas), 7 breathing practices, 7 lotuses, and the vajra wave--108 exercises in all.
Profusely illustrated with drawings and photographs, Yantra Yoga presents Tibet's trulkhor yoga tradition as taught by one of its master exponents, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.
Yantra Yoga's movements, exercises, and methods of concentration are all based on an eighth-century text by Vairocana whose translation is included, illuminated by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu's commentary. Detailed charts for the timing of the breathing exercises are also included.

Enlighten Up! (2009)

Enlighten Up! (2009)
Kate Churchill is a filmmaker and a dedicated yoga practitioner who insists that yoga can transform anyone. She decides to prove it. Her plan: select a subject, immerse him in yoga and follow him until he finds a yoga practice that transforms him. Her subject: Nick Rosen a skeptical, 29 year-old journalist living in New York City.

Intrigued by the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of a 5.7 billion dollar “spiritual” industry, Nick signs on to investigate yoga for 6 months. Before he can say OM, he finds himself twisted up like a pretzel, surrounded by celebrity yogis, true believers, kooks, entrepreneurs and a gentle teacher from Brazil who leads his class with his feet behind his head.

The more Nick investigates yoga the more contradictions he discovers, leading him to question whether yoga is anything more than a workout. As Nick searches for concrete facts and discards the lofty spiritual theories of his yoga teachers, he strays further from Kate’s original plan. The two find themselves lost in Northern India, embroiled in a struggle between Kate’s expectations and Nick’s overt rejection of “spirituality.”

They circle the globe talking to mystics, gurus, mad men and saints searching for the true meaning of yoga. Ultimately, both Nick and Kate end up in places they never could have imagined. They don’t find the answers to their questions, they find much more.

Buddhist Yoga: A Comprehensive Course

Buddhist Yoga: A Comprehensive Course - Thomas Cleary
The word "yoga" has many meanings, including "meditation", "method", and "union." While the physical exercises of Hindu yoga are familiar to westerners, the subtle metaphysics and refined methods of spiritual development that characterize Buddhist Yoga are not yet well known. This volume presents a landmark translation of a classical sourcebook of Buddhist Yoga, the "Scripture Unlocking the Mysteries," a revered text of the Yogachara school of Buddhism. The study of this text is essential preparation for anyone undertaking meditation exercise. Linking theory and practice, the scripture offeres a remarkably detailed and thorough course of study in both the philosophical and pragmatic foundation of Buddhist yoga, amd their perfect, harmonious union in the realization of Buddhist enlightenment.

Bhava Yoga - Russill Paul

Bhava Yoga - Russill Paul
A traditionalist with an ear for pop, Russill Paul is one of the yoga world's most powerful devotional chanters and musicians. He works within the Indian classical music realm to create beautiful pieces that lift the spirit and provide a supportive environment for asana practice, chanting, or just relaxing. This is the third volume of his "Yoga of Sound" series, and features chants and mantras from a variety of sources, including Hindu and Sufi. Customary Indian flutes and percussion blend with more modern instrumentation and production, resulting in a timeless and universal sound. Paul's melodious, deep voice is a pleasure to listen to, although extensive liner notes and instructions for chanting encourage active participation.

THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF YOGA Volume 2

THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF YOGA Volume 2 - Swami Krishnananda
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are aphoristic prescriptions in the form of pithy one-liners for leading the mind into deeper states of absorption in the state of Samadhi, where the individual merges with the Absolute.A tranquil mind is a pre-requisite for attaining the higher states of awareness and the Yoga Sutras are a graduated manual for the achievement of this goal. The aphorisms in their original form can not be undestood easily.Swami Krishnananda's commentary is easy to decipher and reader friendly, lucid style probes into the aphorisms and lays before seekers the approach to understanding the mind and it s machinations, and how the hurdles that make meditation difficult can be overcome. The rendition and style in which this has been made possible is a tribute to Swamiji s love for truth. This series of two volumes is an all encompassing spirtual guide. The teachings are progressive in content and begin where most seekers find themselves when spiritual aspiration dawns and the need for higher understanding is felt.Ther reader is led gradually through the different aspects of practice and mind management. Volume I,which covers the Samadhi Pada, the first of the four sections of the Yoga Sutras, and provides a good introduction and in-depth understanding of the philosophy and practice of yoga including the levels of consciousness that are attained, has been printed first. Volume II covers the Sadhana Pada and Kaivalya Pada which go into further detail about the practice of yoga using the aphoristic rungs of Patanjali Yoga sutras as a veritable stairway on the path of the ascent of the spirit.Nothing is left unsaid as Swamiji brings the teachings together in two volumes as a complete treatise on this spiritual path.

Yoga Practice for Energy

Yoga Practice for Energy
"Yoga Practice for Energy" is a different kind of workout. Filmed at the beach on Maui, the sessions Awakening, Centering, Creativity, Reflection, and Surrender offer movements that follow the cycle of the sun through the course of a day. Viewers are encouraged to first try the entire tape several times, and then use the sessions that correspond to their needs at any particular time. For example, if you've just trudged in the door from a hectic day, you may want to use the Reflection session, in which "a cooling, tranquil series of forward bends and hip openers let all activities of the day seep in like watercolors setting into paper." Almost no narrative accompanies the five practice sessions, and if you are a beginner you may feel lost at first viewing.

Synthesis of Yoga - Sri Aurobindo

Synthesis of Yoga - Sri Aurobindo
"Truth of philosophy is of a merely theoretical value unless it can be lived, and we have therefore tried in The Synthesis of Yoga to arrive at a synthetical view of the principles and methods of the various lines of spiritual self-discipline and the way in which they can lead to an integral divine life in the human existence". Index.

The Synthesis of Yoga first appeared serially in the monthly review Arya between August 1914 and January 1921. Each instalment was written immediately before its publication. The work was left incomplete when the Arya was discontinued. Sri Aurobindo never attempted to complete the Synthesis; he did, however, lightly revise the Introduction, thoroughly revise all of Part I, “The Yoga of Divine Works”, and significantly revise several chapters of Part II, “The Yoga of Integral Knowledge”. More than thirty years elapsed between the first appearance of the Synthesis in the Arya and the final stages of its incomplete revision. As a result, there are some differences of terminology between the revised and unrevised portions of the book.

In 1948 the chapters making up “The Yoga of Divine Works” were published as a book by the Sri Aurobindo Library, Madras. No other part of The Synthesis of Yoga appeared in
book-form during Sri Aurobindo’s lifetime. In 1955 an edition comprising the Introduction and four Parts was brought out by the Sri Aurobindo International University Centre. The present edition, which has been checked against all manuscripts and printed texts, includes for the first time the author’s revisions to the Introduction and Chapters XV– XVII of Part II, and an incomplete continuation of Part IV entitled “The Supramental
Time Consciousness”.

Paramhansa Swami Yogananda: Life-portrait and Reminiscences - Yoga Niketan

Paramhansa Swami Yogananda: Life-portrait and Reminiscences - Yoga Niketan
The writer of this book gathered most of the material for this book directly from his personal talks with Swami Yoganandaji himself, as well as from personal talks with Yoganandajis childhood companion Satyanandaji and Swamijis relatives, friends and students. But most importantly, this writer was made aware of many hitherto unknown things via three particularly essential ways. First: this writer was blessed with Yoganandajis affection and trust. Second: this writer was directly initiated by Swamijis guru Sriyukteshvarji and he was regularly in Sriyukteshvarjis physical company. During this time, this writer was privileged to hear his Gurudev speak descriptively about Yoganandaji carrying out his duties when he was still living in India, as well as Sriyukteshvarjis own feelings at the time and the Divine Grace around such activities. And third: this writer was the exceptional recipient of Swami Satyanandajis great affection and trust. At an incalculably precious moment in a time when the secret methods of Kriya Yoga sadhana were being spread in India and subsequently in the world, the goddess of fate placed upon this writer this undertaking.

Samadhi: The Numinous And Cessative in Indo-tibetan Yoga - Stuart Ray Sarbacker

Samadhi: The Numinous And Cessative in Indo-tibetan Yoga - Stuart Ray Sarbacker
Explores yoga and meditation in Eastern religions, incorporating psychological and social aspects of these practices.

"This book, which is an elaboration of the author's doctoral dissertation, purports "to develop a new methodological approach to the study of yoga and meditation in the religions of South Asia, most notably in the context of Hinduism and Buddhism" (p. 1). Specifically, Sarbacker attempts to integrate psychological and sociological approaches into "a larger phenomenological model." He thus intends to move beyond Mircea Eliade's psychological orientation in explaining religious, yogic phenomena and more sociological approaches, such as I. M. Lewis's. His declared hope is that his study will contribute toward the development of "contemplative studies as a subdiscipline of the History of Religions methodology"
His chosen foci are Classical Yoga, Indian Buddhism, and Tantra. Fundamental to his model is the distinction between what he calls the "numinous" and "cessative" aspects of spiritual practice. By "numinous" he means "the manner in which a practitioner of yoga embodies the world-surmounting power of divinity," while "cessative" stands for the orientation of attaining freedom through separation from phenomenal existence.

Given the methodological nature of this book, the author is understandably preoccupied with definitional and hermeneutical matters, but the patient reader will be rewarded with a spate of helpful insights regarding the yogic process and the dynamics between theory and practice. The book's primary value, however, is in that it generates a host of questions that invite deeper analysis.

Universal Love: The Yoga Method of Buddha Maitreya - Lama Thubten Yeshe

Universal Love: The Yoga Method of Buddha Maitreya - Lama Thubten Yeshe

Lama Yeshe gives a commentary on the practice of Maitreya Buddha. "Maitreya is the manifestation of the love of all the Buddhas - all the supreme beings who have achieved limitless, universal love. When we practice the yoga method of Buddha Maitreya we unify with the universal love energy that is Maitreya by developing to their ultimate extent the limited qualities of love, compassion and purity that presently lie within us…Tantra is the right practice for Westerners and of the utmost need in the twentieth century. After all, the Buddha wanted us to have as much perfect pleasure as possible; he certainly didn't want us to be miserable, confused or dissatisfied. Therefore we should understand that we meditate in order to gain profound pleasure, not to beat ourselves up or to experience pain. If entering the Buddhist path brings you nothing but fear and guilt then it's certainly not worth the effort." Lama Thubten Yeshe.

Planet Yoga: Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace

Planet Yoga: Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace
If you ever attended a yoga class where background music was played or if you have read any yoga magazines, chances are that you are familiar with most of the artists compiled under this two-Cd album. Names such as Krishna Das, Jay Uttal, Deva Premal and Rasa, just to name a few, are some of the great artists grouped here. Even if you don't practice yoga, but enjoy listening to world (or trance) music, you'll probably enjoy this tape as much as I do.
The first Cd has Indian healing chants but performed by westerners, (as Krishna Das writes on the intro to the booklet); so if the lyrics are Indian, the music is not. It may fall in the category of enviromental or acoustic which makes it more appealing for our western taste.

Yoga: On Sacred Ground - Chinmaya Dunster

Yoga: On Sacred Ground - Chinmaya Dunster
This album was written to accompany an hour-long session of Hatha yoga. The composer, longtime yoga expert Chinmaya Dunster, divided the program into seven songs to reflect the body's seven chakras, or energy points. He alternates between slow and mystical compositions and more uptempo, energy-driven pieces that match the varying paces of the Hatha workout. The rich, textured sounds of this music seem to acknowledge an entire host of international traditions, but ultimately there is a distinctly Indian flavor, due to the generous use of the sarod, an Indian stringed instrument.
