Natural Perfection: Longchenpa's Radical Dzogchen

Natural Perfection: Longchenpa's Radical Dzogchen - Longchen Rabjam
Dzogchen or the Great Perfection is the apex of Tibetan Buddhism, and Longchen Rabjam is recognized as the pre-eminent master of Dzogchen and one of Tibet's greatest writers and sages. His Treasury of Reality encompasses and optimizes the radical precepts of Dzogchen and is a shining example of why people continue to turn to the traditions of Tibet for spiritual and personal transformation. Transcending the Tibetan context, Longchen Rabjam’s book is a manual of practical wisdom for all people of all times, cultures, and traditions. Dzogchen teaches the natural perfection of all experience, phenomena, and life, just as it is, with no need to alter or fabricate complex ideas or philosophical views. This discipline of spiritual transcendence provides the key not only to our inner enlightenment but to the health and survival of our planet.

Joyful Wisdom: Embracing Change and Finding Freedom

Joyful Wisdom: Embracing Change and Finding Freedom - Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, Eric Swanson

Yongey Mingyur is one of the most celebrated among the new generation of Tibetan meditation masters, whose teachings have touched people of all faiths around the world. His first book, The Joy of Living, was a New York Times bestseller hailed as “compelling, readable, and informed” (Buddhadharma) and praised by Richard Gere, Lou Reed, and Julian Schnabel for its clarity, wit, and unique insight into the relationship between science and Buddhism.

His new book, Joyful Wisdom, addresses the timely and timeless problem of anxiety in our everyday lives. “From the 2,500-year-old perspective of Buddhism,” Yongey Mingyur writes, “every chapter in human history could be described as an ‘age of anxiety.’ The anxiety we feel now has been part of the human condition for centuries.” So what do we do? Escape or succumb? Both routes inevitably lead to more complications and problems in our lives. “Buddhism,” he says, “offers a third option. We can look directly at the disturbing emotions and other problems we experience in our lives as stepping-stones to freedom. Instead of rejecting them or surrendering to them, we can befriend them, working through them to reach an enduring authentic experience of our inherent wisdom, confidence, clarity, and joy.”

Divided into three parts like a traditional Buddhist text, Joyful Wisdom identifies the sources of our unease, describes methods of meditation that enable us to transform our experience into deeper insight, and applies these methods to common emotional, physical, and personal problems. The result is a work at once wise, anecdotal, funny, informed, and graced with the author’s irresistible charm.

Awakening The Buddhist Heart

Awakening The Buddhist Heart - Lama Surya Das
The "Buddhist heart" that Surya Das refers to in his third book turns out to be a good heart. Blending intimate anecdotes with wisdom gleaned from his decades of study with traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachers, the American-born author seeks to help readers to awaken this heart so that their everyday relationships may become a way to experience the meaningful interconnectedness and sacrednessness of life. Surya Das wishes to cut to the essence of Buddhist wisdom, while bolstering a general readership with a dawn-of-a-new-era pep talk: "As we enter a new century and a new millennium... it seems increasingly important to awaken our Buddha-like hearts through spiritual connections." Unlike in his first two books Awakening the Buddha, an explication of Tibetan Buddhism, and Awakening the Sacred, an attempt to describe spiritual values in nonsectarian terms here Surya Das initially seems to be trying to be all things to all people, and the advice he offers can feel flimsy or vague. He counsels readers to cultivate a more authentic presence, for example, by learning to be natural, simple and open. The disarming honesty of the many personal accounts he presents puts a friendly human face on an ancient tradition, yet the work as a whole lacks power and coherence.

Fluent Tibetan

Fluent Tibetan
Fluent Tibetan is a significant and unmatched achievement in the field of teaching colloquial Tibetan." -- The Tibet Journal The most systematic and extensive course system available in spoken Tibetan language, Fluent Tibetan was developed by language experts working in conjunction with indigenous speakers at the University of Virginia. Based upon courses for diplomats needing to learn a language quickly, the method acquaints students with the sounds and patterns of Tibetan speech, through repetitive interactive drills, enabling the quick mastery of increasingly complex structures, and thereby promoting rapid progress in speaking the language. Fluent Tibetan is the best course available anywhere for learning on your own. The package consists of textbooks and tape recordings, arranged in fifteen units. The first three units are devoted to recognition and pronunciation of the Tibetan alphabet and its combinations in syllables and words. With unit four, vocabulary and grammatical patterns are introduced in situational dialogues. Each dialogue is followed by extensive drills repeating the vocabulary and grammatical patterns in different contexts thereby teaching how to use the language creatively. The exceptionally clear voices in the dialogues and drills are both male and female indigenous Tibetans. The glossary is both Tibetan-English and English-Tibetan. Fluent Tibetan corresponds to a year of college-level language study.

Maitreya's Uttaratantra: A Treatise on Buddha-Essence - Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche

Maitreya's Uttaratantra: A Treatise on Buddha-Essence - Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche

A commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche on the Uttara Tantra Shastra of Maitreya. The Uttaratantra elucidates the teachings from the Buddha's Third Turning of the Wheel of Dharma. The first turning was the Four Noble Truths, the second the Prajnaparamita and the third was on the subject of Buddha nature - the essential qualities and potential for enlightenment present in all beings. As the root verses of the text are in prose they require an oral transmission and commentary to explain their vast and profound meaning.

"The elucidation of this potential, emptinesss and luminosity inseperable, is the bridge between the sutra and tantra paths, the view of vajrayana and the ground of mahamudra, thus it is an essential text for all practitioners of the Buddhadharma. In addition to the theoretical transmission is the meditative approach to this text, the lineage of which continued through the Kagyu tradition, received first by the Third Karmapa and continuing unbroken to the present day. This is what is transmitted here through the great wisdom and compassion of Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche." Lama Karma Shedrup

Mirror of Wisdom: Teachings on Emptiness - Tsultim Gyeltsen

Mirror of Wisdom: Teachings on Emptiness - Tsultim Gyeltsen

In this book, Venerable Geshe Gyelsten does indeed help us establish a correct view of emptiness, the ultimate mode of being of all phenomena, which we have to do if we are ever to escape from our beginningless suffering and find the perfect peace and happiness we seek. Basing his explanation of emptiness on The Heart Sutra, the essence of the Buddha's perfection of wisdom teachings, and the emptiness section of a classic Tibetan thought transformation text, Namkha Pel's Mind Training Like the Rays of the Sun, Geshe-la compassionately helps us cut through our inability to see reality and sets us firmly on the path to liberation and enlightenment.

Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen, a leading Tibetan lama, human rights activist and founder of a Buddhist center in Long Beach, California, passed away Feb. 13, 2009, at the age of 85 following a brief illness. Gyeltsen died at his home at the Thubten Dhargye Ling Buddhist center, which he founded in 1978, two decades after he fled the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

A member of the same Buddhist sect as the Dalai Lama, Gyeltsen was known for his traditional approach to Buddhist teaching, He was one of a dwindling number of Tibetan-born teachers who followed the Dalai Lama into exile 50 years ago. Geshe Gyelsten was one of the teachers who brought Buddhism to the West.

Ordinary Wisdom: Sakya Pandita's Treasury of Good Advice - trans. by John Davenport

Ordinary Wisdom: Sakya Pandita's Treasury of Good Advice - trans. by John Davenport

A popular guide to the art of living, the Sakya Legshe—;or "Treasury of Good Advice"—;has been fundamental to the development of Tibetan culture and character. As in Aesop's Fables, Sakya Pandita uses proverbs and stories to address the basic question: "How are we to live peaceably with ourselves and with others?" This is the only available English translation of the Sakya Legshe—;a book that reveals the heart of the Buddhist way of life.

"Ordinary Wisdom is a sterling translation of one of the most loved books of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Sakya Pandita's masterpiece gives advice on the conduct of life suitable for the ordinary individual. Because many of the similes and metaphors used by the 13th century author are difficult to understand, John Davenport has used modern commentaries to clarify and explain the verses. Davenport opens timeless Tibetan wisdom to Western readers."—Gelek Rinpoche, Jewel Heart

"If you want to know, not how lamas learned their Buddhism, but how Tibetan peasants learned it, this is your book."—Huston Smith, author of The World's Religions

Sakya Pandita (1182-1251)—a renowned scholar and Tibetan statesman—staved off a Mongolian invasion by converting Emperor Godan to Buddhism.

This set presents the practice of tonglen in several forms. Excellent guided meditations. This is NOT the author narrating her book ("The Places That Scare You"). This is a live, weekend program on how to put the teachings of that book into practice. Very informative and helpful.

Start Where You Are - Pema Chodron

Start Where You Are - Pema Chodron
Pema Chodron is a Buddhist nun for regular folks. Having raised a family of her own, she doesn't shy away from persistent troubles and the basic meatiness of life. In fact, in Start Where You Are, Chodron tries to get us to see that the faults and foibles in each of us now are the perfect ingredients for creating a better life. No need to wait for a quieter time or a more settled mind. The trick Chodron says is to repattern ourselves, to transform bad habits into good by first opening ourselves to the groundlessness of existence. When the cliff dissolves beneath our feet, fear has a way of actually lessening. Fearlessness opens the way to recognizing our pushy egos and that rather than being cursed with original sin, we are blessed with an original soft spot--the squishy feeling inside that we all have, that is the seat of true compassion, and that we all do our best to armor over. Chodron is the kind of teacher who has seen it all and keeps pushing us back into ourselves until there's no one left to wrestle with but a certain recalcitrant image in the mirror

The Lost Art of Compassion - Lorne Ladner

The Lost Art of Compassion - Lorne Ladner
This practical guide to cultivating compassion delivers Buddhist and psychological insight right where we need it most—navigating the difficulties of our daily lives.
Compassion is often seen as a distant, altruistic ideal cultivated by saints, or as an unrealistic response of the naively kind-hearted. Seeing compassion in this way, we lose out on experiencing the transformative potential of one of our most neglected inner resources.
Dr Lorne Ladner rescues compassion from this marginalised view, showing how its practical application in our life can be a powerful force in achieving happiness. Combining the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism and Western psychology, Ladner presents clear, effective practices for cultivating compassion in daily living.

Prayers to the Protector - Thupten Pema Lama with Steve Roach

Prayers to the Protector - Thupten Pema Lama with Steve Roach

It was inevitable that synthesist Steve Roach would apply his soundscape designs to the deep, ancient, and often harrowing chants of Tibetan Buddhist monks. He's gone into the primal core with Aboriginal sounds and cultures on albums such as Dreamtime Return, and his Magnificent Void CD stepped into the abyss. On Prayers to the Protector, he works with the chants of Thupten Pema Lama of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery. In Roach's studio, Thupten Pema Lama sang these devotional prayers and entreaties unaccompanied. Then Roach slipped them into his own soundworld, surrounding the monk with evanescent waves of synthesized ambiences. Being Steve Roach, this isn't the usual pretty New Age synth-glissandos, but darkly hued textures with metallic edges. On "Djewa takgya lingchee lhunbur dje" (a prayer for the world, according to the liner notes), he evokes the metal gongs and bowls of Tibetan chants as well as a freight train putting on the brakes in space. Prayers to the Protector doesn't dress up Buddhist chants, it just sends them into deeper space.

Thupten Pema Lama is a Tibetan monk, from the Gelugpa Tradition (the same lineage as the Dalai Lama). He sat in the Timeroom studio of Steve Roach in 1996, and said his daily three-tiered practice: taking refuge, the Ganden Lhagya and the tantric practice of homage to the guru and protectors, the Guru Puja/Lama Chopa. The latter two contain the entire Lam Rim, or the 64 stages on the path to enlightenment as organized by Je Tsongkapa founder of the Gelugpa sect. They are said daily not only by monks and nuns, but Tibetan Buddhist practitioners who have received tantric initiation (required for the Lama Chopa).

Sacred Tibetan Chant - Monks Of Sherab Ling Monastery

Sacred Tibetan Chant - Monks Of Sherab Ling Monastery
With this recording, the Monks of Sherab Ling Monastery, based in the forests of Northern India, familiarize the outside world with the intimacy of their daily rituals through the chants and prayers that begin and end each of their days. This live recording reveals the Monks' deep worship and devotion. In "Mahamudra Lineage Prayer and Meditation," guttural chants are drawn-out and somewhat melodious, while in "Invocation and Offering to Mahakala," short bursts of vocals often sound like talking or narration. "Receiving Blessings and Dedicating the Merit to World Peace and Harmony," punctuated by drums and other percussive elements, feels like a celebration. This recording is an awesome depiction of authentic pious sound straight from the mouths of devout worshippers.

Tibetan and Zen Buddhism in Britain - David N Kay

Tibetan and Zen Buddhism in Britain - David N Kay
This book analyses the transplantation, development and adaptation of the two largest Tibetan and Zen Buddhist organizations currently active on the British religious landscape: the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) and the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC). The key contributions of recent scholarship are evaluated and organized thematically to provide a framework for analysis, and the history and current landscape of contemporary Tibetan and Zen Buddhist practice in Britain are also mapped out. A number of patterns and processes identified elsewhere are exemplified, although certain assumptions made about the nature of 'British Buddhism' are subjected to critical scrutiny and challenged.

Universal Love: The Yoga Method of Buddha Maitreya - Lama Thubten Yeshe

Universal Love: The Yoga Method of Buddha Maitreya - Lama Thubten Yeshe

Lama Yeshe gives a commentary on the practice of Maitreya Buddha. "Maitreya is the manifestation of the love of all the Buddhas - all the supreme beings who have achieved limitless, universal love. When we practice the yoga method of Buddha Maitreya we unify with the universal love energy that is Maitreya by developing to their ultimate extent the limited qualities of love, compassion and purity that presently lie within us…Tantra is the right practice for Westerners and of the utmost need in the twentieth century. After all, the Buddha wanted us to have as much perfect pleasure as possible; he certainly didn't want us to be miserable, confused or dissatisfied. Therefore we should understand that we meditate in order to gain profound pleasure, not to beat ourselves up or to experience pain. If entering the Buddhist path brings you nothing but fear and guilt then it's certainly not worth the effort." Lama Thubten Yeshe.
