When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times

When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times
How can we go on living when things fall apart—when we are overcome by pain, fear, and anxiety? Pema Chödrön’s answer to that question contains some spectacularly good news: there is a fundamental happiness readily available to each one of us, no matter how difficult things seem to be. To find it, according to traditional Buddhist teaching, we must learn to stop running from suffering and instead actually learn to approach it—fearlessly, compassionately, and with curiosity. This radical practice enables us to use all situations, even very painful ones, as means for discovering the truth and love that are utterly indestructible.

Pema Chodron - Double Pack

Pema Chodron - Good Medicine
Within Buddhism, there are many stories that refer to its founder as the "supreme physician" – a healer of all illness – mental, physical, and spiritual. The Buddha’s prescription for right living led directly to tonglen, a Tibetan meditation practice that is today the medicine our hearts have been searching for. On the new enhanced CD edition of Good Medicine, American Buddhist nun Pema Chodron shares the gift of this simple and elegant meditation system: a way to befriend ourselves, accept the past we have rejected, and widen our circle of compassion. Includes rare live footage with Pema Chodron, interview excerpts, and other enhancements available here for the first time.

The places that scare you - A guide to fearlessness in difficult times

Pema Chödrön may have more good one-liners than a Groucho Marx retrospective, but this nun's stingers go straight to the heart: "The essence of bravery is being without self-deception"; "When we practice generosity, we become intimate with our grasping"; "Difficult people are the greatest teachers." These are the punctuations to specific teachings of fearlessness. In The Places That Scare You, Chödrön introduces a host of the compassionate warriors' tools and concepts for transforming anxieties and negative emotions into positive living. Rather than steeling ourselves against hardship, she suggests we open ourselves to vulnerability; from this comes the loving kindness and compassion that are the wellsprings of joy. How do we achieve it? Through meditation, mindfulness, slogans, aspiration, and several other practices, such as tonglen, which is taking in the pain and suffering of others while sending out happiness to all--emphasis on the all. Chödrön introduces each of these practices in turn, backing them up with succinct practical reasoning and a framework of ideas that offers fresh interpretations of familiar words like strength, laziness, and groundlessness. Chödrön is the type of person you'd like to have with you in an emergency, and to deal with the extremes of daily life. In her absence, The Places That Scare You will do nicely.

Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality - Pema Chodron

Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality - Pema Chodron
An urge comes up, we succumb to it, and it becomes stronger. We reinforce our cravings, habits, and addictions by giving in to them repeatedly. Pema Chödrön guides us through this "sticky feeling" and offers us tools for learning to stay with our uneasiness, soften our hearts toward others, and ourselves and live a more peaceful life in the fullness of the present moment.
Pema Chödrön is an American bhikshuni, or Buddhist nun in the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition. Since her ordination in 1974, Ane Pema ("Ane" is a Tibetan honorific for a nun) has conducted workshops, seminars, and meditation retreats in Europe, Australia, and throughout North America. She is the director of Gampo Abbey, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in North America. Pema Chödrön is also an acharya (master teacher) in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche.

Pema Chodron - Bodhisattva Mind

A guide to cultivating the mind of a bodhisattva, one who has altruistically dedicated themselves totally to others and is intent on enlightenment for their sake. Pema Chodron explores timeless insights and practices from the teachings of the classic work by the Indian master Shantideva, the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, and she examines the qualities of mind we need to develop on the path to enlightenment.

Like a wild elephant, the distracted mind causes emotions to escalate, but if the mind is trained to be steady and open, no matter what comes at you, you will remain calm in the immediacy of your experience. On these talks, Pema Chodron leads you through a series of practices inspired by Shantideva to help you "tether" your thoughts and emotions - not as a limiting force - but as a means to restore yourself in the freedom of the present moment.

"If we approach the wildness of our mind like a horse whisperer - using gentleness, compassion, and kindness - we return to our natural state of expansiveness that is always available to us." Pema Chodron.
