Lion's Gaze

Lion's Gaze: A Commentary on Tsig Sum Nedek
The most profound and direct teaching of Buddha Shakyamuni's is called Dzogchen, or atiyoga, the Clear Light Great Perfection. This is the culmination of all nine vehicles that form the foundation path. Familiarity with its view, meditation and conduct brings unique results. In "Lion's Gaze", the authors Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche, a highly qualified Lama and Dzogchen Master, and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche, also a highly qualified Lama, Kama and Terma lineage holder and recognized expert in ancient Tantric literature, gather the teachings and reintroduce their essence in a timeless way. The first part of the book summarizes the history of Dzogchen and notes its lineage masters, illustrated with 15 beautiful portrait line drawings, and continues with explainations of the preliminary practices.
The second section begins with "Three Words That Strike The Crucial Point", written by 8th century Vidyadhara Garab Dorje, the first human teacher of Dzogchen. This three line text is followed by Master Patrul Rinpoche's famous commentary entitled, "The Special Teaching of The Wise and Glorious Sovereign", written in the 19th century. The original Tibetan with English translations are provided for all original texts.

Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment

Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment
Wallace, founder of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies, explores key Buddhist meditation-related concepts that aid the "conquest of our inner obscurations" and "present a path to inner fulfillment and human flourishing." He first examines several particular methods—such as "mindfulness of breathing"—for cultivating shamatha, a state of "meditative quiescence" in which people's capacity for attention is refined and stabilized. They can then use these techniques to make a direct, delusion-free investigation of their own bodies, feelings and thoughts. These insights, in turn, help them nurture hearts of compassion and equanimity and, ultimately, realize more advanced teachings such as cultivating bodhichitta (a "spirit of awakening"), dream yoga and a highly developed meditation technique known as dzogchen. Wallace's discussions are usually clear and helpful (on why meditation works: "sustained, continuous effort can actually reconfigure your brain"), and his questions invite readers to see for themselves if his assertions resonate. Moreover, each chapter contains guided meditations to help readers encounter the teachings more directly. Nevertheless, the text can become dense and self-referential, and if readers miss a particular point early on, the effectiveness of later sections may be lessened. The result is a solid—if advanced—examination of some key Buddhist meditation techniques that will appeal to the serious student more than the casual seeker.

Wisdom Nectar: Dudjom Rinpoche's Heart Advice

Wisdom Nectar: Dudjom Rinpoche's Heart Advice
Dudjom Rinpoche was one of the seminal figures in Tibetan Buddhism in the twentieth century, yet very few of his religious writings have been translated into English. This volume contains a generous selection of his inspiring teachings and writings, the core of which is a lengthy discussion of the entire path of Dzogchen, including key instructions on view, meditation, and conduct, along with direct advice on how to bring one's experiences onto the path.

Also included in this book in their entirety are the oral instructions, tantric songs, and songs of realization of His Holiness's Collected Works, along with a generous selection of the aspiration and supplication prayers.

Being Right Here

Being Right Here: A Dzogchen Treasure Text of Nuden Dorje entitled The Mirror of Clear Meaning
The treasure text of Nuden Dorje renders a very clear and authentic account of the view and essential meditation of dzogchen, the practice of nondual experience. The presentation is the Men ngag style, a personal instruction distilling the author's own realization in a manner both beautiful and deeply meaningful. Short verses show, with pithy clarity, how the various aspects of dzogchen fit together. The text provides both an authentic portrayal of the practice and a clear instruction in how to apply it.

Unbounded Wholeness: Dzogchen, Bon, and the Logic of the Nonconceptual

Unbounded Wholeness: Dzogchen, Bon, and the Logic of the Nonconceptual
"Unbounded Wholeness offers an original and compelling study of the Dzogchen contemplative traditions of Bon, the indigenous Tibetan religion. In this well-researched and beautifully written book, Anne Carolyn Klein and Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche chart new terrain, revealing in Bon a dynamic way of spiritual self-cultivation and thought. This is an outstanding contribution to our knowledge of Asian religions and philosophies." --Matthew Kapstein, author of The Tibetan Assimilation of Buddhism: Conversion, Contestation and Memory
"This volume is a major contribution to our understanding of the Tibetan philosophical and religious tradition. The study opens this difficult literature to the Western reader and the translation is lucid and accessible. This is a fine example of the fruits of close collaboration between an eminent Tibetan scholar and an eminent Western Tibetologist." --Jay L. Garfield, co-translator of Ocean of Reasoning: A Great Commentary on Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika.

The Great Perfection - Samten G. Karmay

The Great Perfection - Samten G. Karmay
The Great Perfection (rDzogs chen in Tibetan) is a philosophical and meditative teaching. Its inception is attributed to Vairocana, one of the first seven Tibetan Buddhist monks ordained at Samye in the eight century A.D. The doctrine is regarded among Buddhists as the core of the teachings adhered to by the Nyingmapa school whilst similarly it is held to be the fundamental teaching among the Bonpos, the non-Buddhist school in Tibet. After a historical introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and the Bon, the author deals with the legends of Vairocana (Part I), analysing early documents containing essential elements of the doctrine and comparing them with the Ch'an tradition. He goes on to explore in detail the development of the doctrine in the tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. (Part II). The Tantric doctrines that play an important role are dealt with, as are the rDzogs chen theories in relation to the other major Buddhist doctrines. Different trends in the rDzogs chen tradition are described in Part III. The author has drawn his sources mainly from early unpublished documents which throw light on the origins and development, at the same time also using a variety of sources which enabled him to explicate the crucial position which the doctrine occupies in Tibetan religions.

Bon Po Hidden Treasures - Jean-Luc Achard

Bon Po Hidden Treasures - Jean-Luc Achard
New Bon promises to become an important focus of interest among academic Tibetologists in the coming years. This unique, first-ever English-language volume on Tibet's New Bon religion (14th century onwards) contains the full catalogue of the collected rediscovered teachings revealed by bDe chen gling pa, an important Bon po master of the second part of the 19th century in Eastern Tibet. Belonging to a later period of development within the various lineages of New Bon, bDe chen gling stands as an essential link between this tradition and that of the Ris med movement of the late 19th century.

You Are the Eyes of the World - Longchenpa

You Are the Eyes of the World - Longchenpa
An introduction to the Dzogchen teachings by one of the greatest Nyingma masters, demonstrating how everyday experience is in actuality nothing more than the dance of awareness.

Longchenpa's Jewel Ship: a Guide to the Meaning of Pure and Total Presence, the Creative Energy of the Universe`, presents a method for discovering awareness everywhere, all the time. This book does not discuss how to turn ordinary life off, it does not describe how to create beautiful spiritual experiences, but it does show how to live within the source of all life - the unified field where experience takes place. It includes an introduction by Namkhai Norbu.

Wonders of the Natural Mind, New Edition: The Essence of Dzogchen in the Native Bon Tradition of Tibet

My thanks to Smokey for these great books.

Wonders of the Natural Mind, New Edition: The Essence of Dzogchen in the Native Bon Tradition of Tibet

Based on the fundamental Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud, a Bon text, the author presents the main points of Dzogchen, its relation to various systems within Bon, and some reflections on Dzogchen in the West. Although the Dzogchen teachings are principally familiar to Westerners through the teachings of the Nyingma school, they also survive in the ancient Bon religion of Tibet. In offering these teachings Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche provides the reader with a vivid and engaging portrait of Bon culture as he interweaves the teachings with his personal life story.

Selections from the Bonpo Book of the Dead

Selections from the Bonpo Book of the Dead
Selections from the Bonpo Book of the Dead, with translations, introduction, and commentaries by John Myrdhin Reynolds (1998). This volume presents translations of a number of texts from the Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud dealing with the Bardo or the after-death experience in the intermediate state from the viewpoint of Dzogchen. The commentaries by the translator elucidate many important points in the translations. Comparisons are made of the Dzogchen tradition of the visions of Nirvana and Samsara with the eschatologies and mysticisms found in other spiritual traditions.

Approaching the Great Perfection

Approaching the Great Perfection
Simultaneous and Gradual Methods of Dzogchen Practice in the Longchen Nyingthig

An important new study that looks at one of the lineage's seminal figures, Jigme Lingpa, and makes an extensive analysis of a core tension within Buddhism: does enlightenment develop gradually, or can it come about suddenly?

Dzogchen is the highest meditative practice of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, and Jigme Lingpa was an eighteenth century scholar-yogi whose cycle of teachings, the Longchen Nyingthig, has been handed down through generations as a complete path to enlightenment. Ten of Jigme Lingpa's texts are presented here. Van Schaik shows that both the sudden and gradual approaches and positions on enlightenment are present within each of the Tibetan Buddhist schools, and he demonstrates that Jigme Lingpa is a great illustration of this balancing act, using the rhetoric of both sides to propel his students along the path of the Great Perfection.

"A stimulating contribution to the study of simultaneist and gradualist approaches in Buddhism by way of important new translations and lucid commentary. His insights into the philosophical content of Tibetan tantric literature, as well as into the boundaries between revelation and composition, illuminate the most significant tantric cycle in the Nyingma tradition of the last three centuries." David Germano.

The practice of Dzogchen

The practice of Dzogchen
A compilation of the celebrated Nyingma master Longchenpa's work on Dzogchen. This anthology of writings by the great scholar-yogi reveals the innermost esoteric philosophy and meditation training of Dzogpa Chenpo (Dzogchen), which until recent decades was only whispered into the ears of heart-disciples by the learned masters.

Dzogchen employs a meditative technique which effortlessly uncovers the emotional and intellectual layers of the mind and instantly awakens its essential nature, which is Buddha mind or Buudhahood itself.

"This is one of the most significant works on Tibetan Buddhism to be published in recent years, treating with grace, beauty and depth a most important subject, namely the character of the Dzogchen tradition and its placement within the overall structure of the Nyingma doctrine and training. An understanding of Dzogchen will benefit any philosophical or religious study of Tibetan Buddhism. This is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive works on the Nyingma to appear in English." Glenn Mullin.

"Tulku Thondup Rinpoche has performed a service of inestimable value for all serious students of Buddhist thought. One of Tibet's greatest philosphical-sages, Longchen Rabjampa, is here made accessible to the specialist and interested non-specialist in a manner that is authoritative, comprehensive and clear." Matthew Kapstein.

Old Man Basking in the Sun - Longchenpa's Treasury of Natural Perfection

Old Man Basking in the Sun - Longchenpa's Treasury of Natural Perfection
Dzogchen is the apotheosis of Tibetan Buddhism and Longchenpa is the pre-eminent master of Dzogchen and one of Tibet's greatest mystical poets. The verses of his Treasury of Natural Perfection (Gnas lugs mdzod) written in the fourteenth century encompass and epitomize the radical precepts of Dzogchen while his auto-commentary elaborates their meaning through a concise prose paraphrase and with illustrative quotations from the Collection of Tantras of the Ancients (Rnying ma rgyud 'bum). Transcending the Tibetan context, Longchenpa delivers a manual of wisdom for all people at all times and shows why the western world has turned to Tibet for its mystical inspiration during the last half century. This transmission of timeless wisdom of the Ancients of Tibet should take its place amongst the world's religious classics. Through the precept 'nonaction' - which is savoured like 'an old man basking in the sun' - Dzogchen teaches the natural perfection of all our experience, and all our lives, just as it is, without need of any alteration. This discipline provides the key not only to our inner enlightenment but to the health and survival of our planet.

Eye of the Storm

The five texts translated from Tibetan in this book are considered the first transmission of Dzogchen Ati to Tibet. They constitute the root and essence of Dzogchen in Tibet - basic, raw Dzogchen precepts, appropriately styled "radical Dzogchen". Includes: the Cuckoo's Song of Gnosis, Radical Creativity, the Great Garuda in Flight, Pure Golden Ore, and the Eternal Victory Banner.

" This is the special, extraordinary teaching of our Nyingma lineage. The great masters have all attained realization through Dzogchen, contemporary masters all owe their status to Dzogchen, and any attainment in the future will be based on the precepts of Dzogchen Ati." Bhakha Tulku Pema Rigdzin.

The Precious Treasury of the Way of Abiding

The Precious Treasury of the Way of Abiding
(Naylug Rinpochei Dzöd)
Longchen Rabjam

The Precious Treasury of the Way of Abiding, the first volume to be released in Longchen Rabjam's The Seven Treasuries series, is a treatise on the "four great samayas" of Dzogchen- ineffability, openness, spontaneous presence, and oneness.

In support of his presentation, Longchenpa quotes extensively from the Dzogchen Tantras, as well as from Garab Dorje, Nagarjuna, Shri Singha, Padmasambhava, and other great masters of the early Buddhist tradition.

The volume contains an introduction by the Venerable Tulku Thondup Rinpoche and a forward by His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Chagdud Rinpoche, who has overseen the translation, underscores the importance of this work, saying it is truly a relic of the Dharmakaya. Hardcover.

The Oral Tradition from Zhang-Zhung

The Oral Tradition from Zhang-Zhung
An Introduction to the Bonpo Dzogchen Teachings of the Oral Tradition of Zhang Zhung known as the Zhang-zhung snyan rgyud..
The original Dzogchen teachings are found equally in the old, unreformed Tibetan schools of the Buddhist Nyingmapas and the pre- Buddhist Bonpos. These teachings are substantially the same in both schools in terms of meaning, terminology, and practice, both traditions justly claiming unbroken lineages of transmission coming down to the present day from the 8th century, and even before. Moreover, both schools assert that Dzogchen did not originate in Tibet itself, or even in India, but in Central Asia, variously known as Tazik and Uddiyana. From there it was brought to India and Central Tibet by certain Mahasiddhas, or great adepts, where it represented an Upadesha, or secret oral instruction, concerning an unconditioned state of being and awareness beyond the Tantric process of transformation. This refers to the Natural State of the Nature of Mind, one's own innate Buddha-nature, that is beyond all time, conditioning, and causality. In both traditions, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo, Dzogchen is regarded as the ultimate teaching of the Buddhas of the three times and it is classified as the ninth or highest vehicle to enlightenment.

Bonpo Dzogchen Teachings - Lopon Tenzin Namdak

Bonpo Dzogchen Teachings - Lopon Tenzin Namdak
Nowadays there are two principal philosophical traditions followed by Tibetan Lamas. The first is found among the Sarmapas, or Newer Schools, which employ the Prasangika Madhyamaka view of Chandrakirti, not only in explicating the real meaning of the Sutra system but also in their interpretation of the Tantras. The second is found among the two Older Schools, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo, which emphasize the Dzogchen point of view in elucidating their understanding of the Higher Tantras. Among the Older Schools, Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, which lies beyond the process of Tantric transformation, is regarded as the quintessential teaching of the Buddha, pointing directly to the Nature of Mind and its intrinsic awareness, known as Rigpa. However, according to Lopon Tenzin Namdak Yongdzin Rinpoche, the leading Dzogchen master among the Bonpo Lamas living today, It is necessary for us as practitioners to know what Dzogchen is, how to practice it, and the result of this practice. Lopon Rinpoche undertakes this task in a series of nine teachings he gave some years ago to Western students interested in the view of Dzogchen and its practice in meditation. Here the Lopon compares the Dzogchen view with the views of Madhyamaka, Chittamatra, Tantra and Mahamudra, clearly indicating the similarities and the differences among them. Unlike the traditional educational system found in other Tibetan monasteries, at Tashi Menri Monastery and at Triten Norbutse Monastery, both now re-established in India and Nepal respectively, Dzogchen is not restricted to private meditation instruction only. Rather, it is brought out into the daylight of the marketplace of philosophical ideas and discussed in relation to the viewpoints of Sutra and Tantra. The Lopons exceptionally clear exposition of these various views, which have consequences for ones meditation practice, will be of interest to Western students and practitioners.

Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light - Namkhai Norbu

Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light - Namkhai Norbu
Namkhai Norbu is a tibetan master of the Dzogchen tradition. He is a professor at the Oriental Institute of the University of Naples, Italy. He has authored many books including "The Crystal and the Way of Light", "The Cycle of Day and Night", and "Yantra Yoga".

In "Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light", Norbu Rinpoche gives instructions for developing clarity within the sleep and dream states.

He goes beyond the practices of lucid dreaming that have been popularized in the West, by presenting methods for guiding dream states that are part of a broader system for enhancing self-awareness called Dzogchen. In this tradition, the development of lucidity in the dream state is understood in the context of generating greater awareness for the ultimate purpose of attaining liberation.

Also included in this book is a text written by Mipham, the nineteenth-century master of Dzogchen, which offers additional insights into this extraordinary form of meditation and awareness.
