Luminous Heart

Luminous Heart: The Third Karmapa on Consciousness, Wisdom, and Buddha Nature
The Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (1284-1339), propounded a unique synthesis of Yogachara, Madhyamaka, and the classical teachings on buddha nature. His work occupies an important position between its Indian predecessers and the later, often highly charged, debates in Tibet about rangtong (self-emptiness) and shentong (other-emptiness). The Third Karmapa is widely renowned as one of the major proponents of the Tibetan shentong tradition. This book contains a collection of some of his main writings on buddha nature; the transition of ordinary deluded consciousness to enlightened wisdom; and the characteristics of buddhahood. Though relying strictly on classical Indian sources, the Karmapa's texts are not mere scholarly documents. Their topics and styles bear great significance for practicing the sutrayana and the vajrayana as understood in the Kagyu tradition to the present day, making what is described in these texts a living experience.

Karmapa - Two Ways of Divinity

Karmapa - Two Ways of Divinity
Apart from the exiled Dalai Lama, who is living in India, Tibetan Buddhism has various other spiritual leaders. One of them is the leader of the Karmapa sect, whose birth was already
predicted by the first Buddha, Siddharta Gautama. When the sixteenth reincarnation of the Karmapa leader died in the United States in 1981, monks start a search for the next reincarnation. Ten years later, representatives of the Chinese government in Tibet say they have found him, but an alternative candidate is pushed forward in India. This is the onset of a fierce political sparring. All in all, the production of this double portrait of both hallowed youngsters took six years. Prior to the shooting period from 1994 to 1997, director Arto Halonen (1964) had to wait for three years for permission by the Chinese authorities to film in Tibet, but he concealed the fact that the Dalai Lama and the second intended Karmapa leader, also living in exile in India, would be in his film, too.

A unique, award-winning documentary on the Karmapa and how China used him as a
springboard for its politics that has led to the violation of religious rights. On another level, the film tells the story of the existence of two rival candidates for the title of Karmapa and how the situation of two Karmapas provoked an internal crisis within the Buddhist denomination, as proponents split into different camps. The documentary was made between 1994 -1998 in Tibet, China and India and features the Dalai Lama as well as representatives of the Chinese Government.

Living Buddha - 17th Gyalwa Karmapa

Living Buddha - 17th Gyalwa Karmapa
"Living Buddha" by Clemens Kuby is the real life story of the reincarnation of one of Tibet's greatest and most revered spiritual teachers, the Gyalwa Karmapa. The Karmapa is the traditional head of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Gyalwa Karmapa died in 1981 in Chicago and was born again 1985 in Tibet. Each successive Karmapa left details of their future rebirth, prophesying such things as the date and circumstances of their birth, even the names of their future parents.

When the previous Gyalwa Karmapa died, he had already entrusted his prediction letter and it was on this basis that a successful search was made to find his reincarnation. Kuby follows the search party and documents each successive stage up to the time of the 17th Karmapa's first public blessing at the age of eight. He was identified as Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the long awaited second son in a poor nomadic family in a remote area of eastern Tibet.
An exploration of Tibet as seen through the eyes of historian/documentarian Clemens Kuby. Central to the film is the consecration of the 17th Karmapa, who according to Tibetan belief, is the reincarnation of Buddha and plays a supremely important.
