Universal Love - Nawang Khechog

Universal Love - Nawang Khechog
For spiritual practitioners in Tibet, one of the highest aspirations is to cultivate the heart of universal love—to become one who loves all sentient beings unconditionally. Thus, the measure of whether someone has cultivated universal love is illustrated in the classical Tibetan story of the mother who has only one child ("Buckikpe maa tar") and shows how much she would love and give care to her only child. Yes, this is a tall order and, in my case, I am far from actualizing this wonder and magnificence. Perhaps I can say that I have been inspired by this highest aspiration a tiny bit since my early years due to the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s living inspiration and his teachings on the Tibetan Spiritual culture of universal love. This inspiration gives me some sense of meaning, purpose, and direction, and helps me to channel my anger not to hate anyone, channel my temptations not to become overwhelmed by lust and greed, and channel my heart to try to love all and everyone. I often wonder if, even given a million years to do this, I can cultivate this universal love in my heart. That would be the beginning of the highest journey and meaning of my life.

Oriental Sunrise - Riley Lee

Oriental Sunrise - Riley Lee
Centuries of advancements in musical instruments have bypassed the traditional shakuhachi flute, an ancient instrument formed from bamboo root and equipped with just five finger holes. Its tender, ethereal tone thus remains essentially unaltered since its distant origins in Japan, and in the hands of a master player such as Riley Lee, an Australian, it sings to our spirits with a graceful gentleness that seems just beyond the reach of modern instruments. Lee here performs a series of duets with a koto, a stringed instrument with a harp- or zither-like character (performed by a trio of players), evoking moods of serenity and calm, carrying away your concerns on the receding mists of a golden dawn. Sweet, not shrill, Lee's gentle playing (accented by the sounds of surf at the disc's opening and close) is easily accessible to Western ears and is well-suited for meditation and massage. The combined run time of the disc's four tracks exceeds 56 minutes.

Hommage à Chen Zhong - Chen Zhong

Hommage à Chen Zhong - Chen Zhong
Chen Zhong (1919-2002) was a great master of Chinese music, a multi-instrumentalist particularly renowned for his skill on the xun and xiao flutes. He first gained international recognition in 1994, at the age of 75, with an overseas tour that included Japan, France and Switzerland. Zhong was recorded by Radio France in 1995 (Ocora C560090) and it was the success of that association that led to the release of these serene and intimate ensemble recordings, previously only available in China.

Quiet Heart Spirit Wind - Richard Warner

Quiet Heart Spirit Wind - Richard Warner
Music for Relaxation both Quiet Heart and Spirit Wind were originally released on cassette as separate albums more than 20 years ago. Now, Richard Warner's ethereal and calming improvisations are available in a special 2 - CD set (a remastered repackaging of two releases from 1982's Quiet Heart and 1984's Spirit Wind) that features four additional bonus tracks (two per disc). Quiet Heart is an album of subtle bamboo/alto flute harmonies performed solo by Warner. The music is soulful and spiritual, capturing the essence of calm and stillness. Spirit Wind is also comprised of wandering flute tones; only in this case they are accented by the soothing sound of crystal glasses that were tuned by being filled with water to achieve certain pitches. In addition to the bonus tracks, the music also features 20 - bit remastering for superior sound quality.

Tibetan Meditations, Music & Prayers for Opening the Heart - Nawang Khechog

Tibetan Meditations, Music & Prayers for Opening the Heart - Nawang Khechog
A lot of artists evoke the spirit of Tibet, but Nawang Khechog is actually a former Tibetan monk, who took off the robes and took up the flute to travel the world 20 years ago. His albums are usually slotted in the New Age and meditation genres, and certainly his packaging and imagery inspire that. Unfortunately, it overshadows a music that is perhaps deeper, or at least more artistically profound, than that. Tibetan Meditation Music scans less like a background for contemplation and more like a tone poem to the spirit. The opening track seems like an Asian refraction of "Amazing Grace," with Tsering Khechog singing over Nawang Khechog's flute. Khechog's music draws on folk and spiritual traditions but takes them further afield. Think Arvo Pärt on the Tibetan plateau with strings droning a minor-key refrain while Tibetan bells and chimes sound in the background and Khechog chants. I do wish Khechog had brought along just a touch of the drama and shifting moods heard on some of his earlier discs, like the Kitaro-produced Karuna. Tibetan Meditation Music is unvarying in its somber tone. Khechog's chants, which are intimately spoken, whispered more than sung, don't always work on a musical level. But his performances on wood flute are deep explorations into tone and melod

Tony Scott - Music For Yoga Meditation and Other Joys Vol 1 and 2

Tony Scott - Music For Yoga Meditation and Other Joys Vol 1 and 2

You would expect 1968's Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys to have come out on an obscure San Francisco label run out of the back room of a natural foods store and feature amateurish players no one had ever heard of before or since. Yet, this duet album between clarinetist Tony Scott - a former hard bop player in the '50s who had become drawn into world music and a style that can only be called proto - ambient - and sitar player Collin Walcott is actually not just a lifestyle curio, but a musically interesting lifestyle curio. Strip away the Age of Aquarius trappings and Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys is not dissimilar to what Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders would get up to over the next decade:long, flowing melodies and one-chord drones colored by elements of Indian classical music and other world music influences. The nine tracks explore a surprising variety of moods and tonalities given the self-limiting instrument lineup, and though this is too twee and hippie-ish to be called jazz, ambient and space rock fans will be fascinated by it.
