The Dhamma Brothers

The Dhamma Brothers
East meets West in the Deep South. An overcrowded maximum-security prison-the end of the line in Alabama's correctional system-is dramatically changed by the influence of an ancient meditation program. Behind high security towers and a double row of barbed wire and electrical fence dwells a host of convicts who will never see the light of day. But for some of these men, a spark is ignited when it becomes the first maximum-security prison in North America to hold an extended Vipassana retreat, an emotionally and physically demanding course of silent meditation lasting ten days. The Dhamma Brothers tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation as it closely follows and documents the stories of the prison inmates at Donaldson Correction Facility who enter into this arduous and intensive program

Vipassana Meditation 10 Day Course video

Vipassana Meditation 10 Day Course video
This is the Vipassana Meditation 10 Day Course video series given by S.N. Goenka.

This is the same series previously uploaded, reducing the 700 MB files to 230 - 270 MB each and reducing the size of the full series from 7.51 GB to 2.68 GB . The files have cleaner beginnings and endings and the distortion from the lower edge has been cropped.

The video quality is lower, but considering the file size, I think it is quite good, and hey, let's be honest, there is not much to look at in this series. You won't miss anything if you opt for the audio version, but some people like to have a visual to focus on while they listen, so this can serve in that capacity.

The final video, Day 11, has a 24 minute session of chanting, followed by the discourse, followed by another session of chanting. These parts have been split up into separate files so that those who are interested in only the discourse can locate it quickly and easily.

Also included is the PDF file of the Discourse Summaries for those who are new to Vipassana.

Changing From Inside - Documentary on Vipassana in Jail

Changing From Inside - Documentary on Vipassana in Jail
The film, entitled Changing from Inside" is 42 minutes long. It was written and produced primarily for an audience of prison administrators, jail officials, judges, etc. and tells the story of the introduction of Vipassana meditation courses into the North Rehabilitation Facility (N.R.F.) of the King County jail in Seattle, Washington, USA.

The film attempts to answer many of the questions that come from corrections officials after they have seen the earlier film entitled Doing Time, Doing Vipassana, documenting the introduction of this meditation into the prisons of India, or after the idea of meditation as a reform measure has been introduced to them.

In general, Changing from Inside is a compelling account of an intensive pilot meditation program for inmates at the N.F.R. minimum security jail near Seattle, Washington. Under the guidance of both community volunteers and facility staff members, seven women inmates undertake ten days of total silence. They practice the ancient meditation technique of Vipassana for ten hours each day, delving ever deeper into themselves to understand and ultimately master the nature of their behaviors and compulsions. In the end, they are transformed by their inward journey and come away with tools to maintain that transformation.

Changing from Inside also chronicles the personal and professional journey of the articulate, determined facility director, Lucia Meijer, as she rallies her staff to undertake and implement this new and unconventional program. Candid interviews among prison staff reveal a range of reactions, from interest to skepticism. However, the results achieved by the course prove to be an inspiration to everyone involved in the project including the participatants, other inmates and the professional staff, leaving the facility transformed, as well.

Vipassana For Psychiatrists

Vipassana For Psychiatrists
In psychoanalysis the subject reports his free-associations as they occur and is helped to understand his mental mechanisms. A student of Vipassana also finds himself free associating during meditation. However, psychoanalysis and Vipassana differ in their attitudes towards and interpretations of the material of free-association. In Vipassana, the emphasis is on maintaining a continuum of awareness of somatic sensations and inculcating a neutral attitude of indifference and non-indulgence, upekkha, in the ideational material. In psychoanalysis, the ideation material is welcome. In Vipassana the interpretation is mainly phenomeno-logical in terms of the transitory nature, anicca, illusory nature (creating the illusion of "I" etc.), and binding nature dukkha, of emotive processes of clinging raga, aversion dosa and ignorance moha. In psychoanalysis, the interpretation is semantic and helps to decode the messages from the system unconscious, revealing the universal struggle between various forces.

Goenka. Vipassana Meditation Discourse

Goenka. Vipassana Meditation Discourse
Vipassanā (Pāli) or vipaśyanā (विपश्यना, Sanskrit) in the Buddhist tradition means insight into the nature of reality. A regular practitioner of Vipassana is known as a Vipassi (vipaśyin). Vipassana is one of world's most ancient techniques of meditation, the inception of which is attributed to Gautama Buddha. It is a practice of self-transformation through self-observation and introspection. In English, vipassanā meditation is often referred to simply as "insight meditation".

Metta Meditation: Opening the Heart

This is the second gem I found today. Once again a short film about Metta Meditation and community service.

Metta means loving kindness and is a simple, direct and reasonable meditation practice that opens the heart in friendliness to oneself, to others, and to all of life. When practiced mindfully, metta develops tranquility and concentration, provides a way to work with anger and fear, and serves as a means to experience the interrelatedness of life. Traditionally, metta mediation is taught by stories from personal experience - stories that elucidate the method and meaning of the practice, as well as bringing much laughter and, sometimes, poignant tears.

Sylvia Boorstein is a best-selling author and contributor to the Shambhala Sun. Her books include That’s Funny, You Don’t Look Buddhist, and the up-coming Pay Attention, For Goodness Sake. Sylvia is a psychotherapist, and is a teacher and co-founder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin, California, as well as a senior teacher at the Insight Meditation Center in Barre, Massachusetts. She is both a sought after Buddhist teacher and an observant Jew.

Doing Time, Doing Vipassana

This is the story of an ancient meditation technique named Vipassana, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good.It is the story of a strong woman named Kiran Bedi, the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life. These people have shown that reform can work if it is self-reform. Their success has been so dramatic that recently the Indian Government decided to apply Vipassana in all the country's prisons. Other countries are becoming interested as well. The filmmakers spent about two weeks inside Tihar Central Prison in New Delhi and Baroda Jail in the Indian state of Gujarat. They interviewed inmates and jail officials, and filmed in places rarely accessible to film crews, whether Indian or foreign.
