Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life

Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life - Thich Nhat Hanh, Lilian Cheung
If Vietnamese Zen Buddhist master Nhat Hanh says the same thing over and over, it could be because not enough people have heard him, and those who have need a reminder. He speaks to both groups in this work, coauthored by Harvard nutritionist Cheung, urging mindfulness about what people put in their mouths. It's a diet book and a meditation book, an unusual hybrid that makes sense for Nhat Hanh because it applies his essential wisdom: pay attention; breathe. If you consistently do that, you'll eat less, and at least two-thirds of Americans surely need to follow that advice. This book adds a lot of eat-this-and-not-that rules, as well as exercise guidelines, delivering so much information the effect is a little overwhelming. But the core meditation instructions are quintessential Nhat Hanh, steely and loving. This could be the diet-and-exercise book for those who have failed using other methods and need a fresh approach. For Nhat Hanh's many fans, it is the sole wellness book they'll need to remind themselves to only pay attention.

Touching the Earth

Touching the Earth - Thich Nhat Hanh
One of the most powerful acts of devotion is also one of the most simple: bowing down and surrendering to the earth. This is the basis for The Five Prostrations, a time-honored Buddhist meditation practice that joins the mind and body. On Touching the Earth, Buddhist masters Thich Nhat Hanh and Sister Chân Không update this ancient teaching for the modern student. You learn each phase of this practice, which will help empty your body of resentment while opening it to compassion for all life. Through the songs of Sister Chan Khong (whom Thich Nhat Hanh has called a living bodhisattva, or one dedicated to the enlightenment of all beings) you also gain an ancient Buddhist technique for communicating tenderness and healing to your body. Touching the Earth comes to you with a foldout explaining this artful meditation in detail.

Being Peace

Being Peace - Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh delivered the words on this compact disk to an assembly of 700 gathered at Green Gulch Zen Center in Muir Beach, California, on November 3, 1985, and inspired the creation of the best selling book, Being Peace. The teachings contained here provide a crucial antidote to our busy lives, and because of Hanh's experience with the war and his willingness to face the realities of our time, these teachings are also about suffering, reconciliation, and peace.

Mindful Mixed Martial Arts - Thich Nhat Hanh

Mindful Mixed Martial Arts - Thich Nhat Hanh
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
What has always been lacking from MMA is the spirit Mindfulness. While pummeling your opponents head to the ground Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us to pause and Mindfully places hands to palms in a gentle slapping technique. Only the skilled gentle hand of a true Zen master like Thich could bring such beauty and grace to such a violent sport. Thich explains various techniques and moves such as Mindfully breaking dishes on opponents head, Flower Power Strike and the dreaded Flying Monk Iron Butterfly Downward Facing Leg Kick.

No Death, No Fear

No Death, No Fear - Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh always invites us to look deeply, and he does so once again in No Death, No Fear. Recognizing interconnections, Nhat Hanh brings us to beginnings, how they depend on endings, and how they are but temporary manifestations. Everything endures, he says, but in different forms. And this isn't just a palliative to make us feel better for a while--Nhat Hanh's philosophy of Interbeing takes the long view, challenging us to open our eyes to subtle transformations. He shows how extraordinary things happen when we are fully present with others and at peace with ourselves, both of which require openness and deep looking. In his bestselling style of easy prose, compelling anecdotes, and pragmatic advice, Nhat Hanh gradually drains the force out of grief and fear, transforming them into happiness and insightful living. Death doesn't have to be a roadblock, and in No Death, No Fear Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the way around.

The Miracle of Mindfulness

The Miracle of Mindfulness - Thich Nhat Hanh
Miracle of Mindfulness
is a sly commentary on the Anapanasati Sutra, the Sutra on Breath to Maintain Mindfulness. "Sly" because it doesn't read like a dry commentary at all. One of Thich Nhat Hanh's most popular books, Miracle of Mindfulness is about how to take hold of your consciousness and keep it alive to the present reality, whether eating a tangerine, playing with your children, or washing the dishes. A world-renowned Zen master, Nhat Hanh weaves practical instruction with anecdotes and other stories to show how the meditative mind can be achieved at all times and how it can help us all "reveal and heal." Nhat Hanh is a master at helping us find a calm refuge within ourselves and teaching us how to reach out from there to the rest of the world.

What is Nirvana?

What is Nirvana?
Discourse by Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh

In Buddhism, we speak of nirvana which is the cessation of all suffering. Nirvana, first of all, it means the cessation, the extinction of all suffering. But our suffering come from our wrong perceptions. Avidia, misunderstanding. And that is why the practice of meditation, the practice of looking deeply has the purpose of removing wrong perceptions from us. If you are able to remove wrong perceptions, you will be able to be free from the afflictions and the sufferings that always arise from wrong perceptions. You have wrong perception on yourself and on the other, and the other has wrong perception on themselves and on you and that is the cause of fear, of violence, of hatred. That is why trying to remove wrong perceptions is the only way to peace. And that is why nirvana is, first of all, the removal of wrong perceptions. And when you remove wrong perceptions, you remove the suffering... Continued

Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames - Thich Nhat Hanh

Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames - Thich Nhat Hanh
Anger. It can not only ruin our health and our spirits, but destroy lives as well. In this timely, compassionate, and important new book, the great spiritual teacher and author of Living Buddha, Living Christ provides real help for transforming the negative force of anger into a positive and useful energy, bringing harmony and healing to all aspects of our lives.

Anger can be one of the most frustrating emotions, carrying us headlong away from ourselves and depositing us into separation and dismay. Vietnamese monk and world teacher Thich Nhat Hanh tackles this most difficult of emotions in Anger. A master at putting complex ideas into simple, colorful packages, Nhat Hanh tells us that, fundamentally, to be angry is to suffer, and that it is our responsibility to alleviate our own suffering. The way to do this is not to fight our emotions or to "let it all out" but to transform ourselves through mindfulness. Emphasizing our basic interdependence, he teaches us how to help others through deep listening and how to water the positive seeds in those around us while starving the negative seeds. Serious though lighthearted, Anger is a handbook not only for transforming anger but for living each moment beautifully.

In Plum Village, the practice of chanting in English is a flower, slowly blossoming. The chants and music on this CD are some of the first petals to open on this beautiful flower. Chanted by the resident community of Plum Village in 2002, these recordings include most of the chants contained in the Plum Village Chanting and Recitation Book, some live tracks from a monastic precepts ordination ceremony and a traditional incense offering chanted by Thich Nhat Hanh in Vietnamese.

Peace is every step - Thich nhat hanh

Peace is every step - Thich Nhat Hanh
This 50 minute video makes a fine introduction to engaged Buddhism. It follows the life and work of Vietnamese zen monk and peace activist, C from his upbringing in wartorn East Asia, to his exile in France and his activity for peace worldwide. The video also makes a good introduction to the community he founded, Plum Village, and to the Buddhist concept of 'interbeing' ('co-dependent arising'). I found Thich Nhat Hanh's words very inspiring, and the interviews with American Vietnam veterans extremely moving.
